ThorpyFX Fat General Parallel Compr.

I've tried many compressors on my pedal board and end up using them for a while and then they get tossed out since they somehow seem to dull or color my sound or make it obviously compressed. The Fat General kinda enhances what you have, without coloring it (if you choose so) and I just leave it always on since I forget it's there - make no mistake, turning it off will make it really obvious it was on before!

Fat General has a very transparent tone with the blend knob, and you boost your harmonics and sustain pretty subtly. I also add a little top end depending on my guitar choice of the day.

Build quality is also superb!

I have always used a DynaComp. I got a Boss CS-3, sold it. I got a Keeley Compressor+, also sold it.

This one I'll keep. To be honest, it the DynaComp had a blend knob, I would use it, and only it, but I wanted something more transparent, which the DynaComp, on it's best day, is not.

It's got a great build, strong knobs, nice clicky button and the blend switch is a great function. When it's turned to the blend side, you use the blend knob for a wet/dry mix, when it's turned to the juicy side, it's a constant 90/10 split towards wet. I just set the knob that my choice solo blend, and turn to the juicy side for funky rythm parts. No fiddling around with knobs, I just push it with my foot.

Did a lot of research on Optical Compressor Pedals and found a few videos on this one. Every video I watched had great things to say so went ahead and bought it.

Once set up, I turned it on and left the settings as they were out of the box. The difference it made to my clean tone was like Night and Day. Much clearer and really lets the mid frequencies shine through.

Didn't notice much with the treble knob but that is probably because I have the mids boosted with a Boss GE-7.

The only thing I noticed with the blend/juicy switch was that the mix went quieter when I switched to juicy so this setting is probably more suited for heavier sounds.

Very pleased with this pedal and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good compressor.

Der FAT General ist ein optischer Kompressor, der auf der Schaltung des Dinosaural OTC-201 des ehemaligen Lovetone Mitinhabers Dan Coggins beruht. Optischen Kompressoren wird gerne nachgesagt, dass sie besonders unauffällig und musikalisch agieren, was man zumindest beim FAT General durchaus bestätigen kann. Das gesamte Signal wird gleichmäßig angedickt, ohne dass die Bässe zu aufdringlich oder die Höhen verschluckt werden. Bei Bedarf lassen sich die Höhen über den Treble-Regler zusätzlich boosten, was grundsätzlich ein sehr nützliches Feature bei einem Kompressor ist. Die Nebengeräusche halten sich sehr zurück, der FAT General dürfte einer der nebengeräuschärmsten Kompressor Pedale am Markt sein.
Was mir am FAT General allerdings überhaupt nicht gefällt, ist der sog. Blend Modus, der es erlaubt, das Effektsignal dem unkomprimierten Sound zuzumischen. Was in der Theorie nach einer guten Idee klingt, ist in der Praxis leider ziemlich unbrauchbar. Da das komprimierte Signal zugemischt und das Originalsignal in der Lautstärke nicht abgesenkt wird, steigt die Gesamtlautstärke zwangsläufig an, d.h. man kann nur einen minimalen Anteil des komprimierten Sounds zumischen ohne dass die Gesamtlautstärke zu sehr ansteigt (dann hört man aber praktisch keinen Unterschied, egal ob man das Pedal ein- oder ausschaltet) oder man mischt mehr Effektsound zu, dann fungiert der FAT General aber bereits als regelrechter Booster. Das ist vielleicht für einige wenige Nutzer brauchbar, aber grundsätzlich wohl schlicht und einfach eine Fehlkonstruktion. Das ist angesichts des Sounds und der Möglichkeiten dieses Pedals sehr schade und Thorpy sollte das dringend überarbeiten.
Fazit: Der FAT General ist ein solides wertiges Pedal mit sehr guter, einfach zu bedienender Kompression. Leider ist der Blend-Modus, welcher einer der großen Features dieses Effektgerätes sein sollte, ohne praktischen Nutzen. Wer also einen Kompressor mit Blend-Funktion sucht, sollte sich woanders umschauen…
