More than expected

I've bought the garklein for my teenage daughter. She’s an avid recorder collector and a quite decent player (garklein, sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor) when properly motivated.
The instrument is, as the name implies, small. Through a clever, slightly diagonal design of the tone holes it fits my daughters’ hands perfectly. Even I (a large adult male) can play it, but some practice would be needed to close holes reliably each and every time.
The tone of the instrument is loud, clear, and surprisingly stable. Intonation is accurate. The overtones that are generally characteristic for rosewood instruments aren’t all that obvious (could be out of hearing range?). So far, we haven’t been able to find the limit of the responsiveness of the instrument. The lowest tones are much easier to play than it’s usual for majority of baroque or baroque inspired instruments. It results in the limited range (an octave and a sixth) of the instrument. It can be debated whether this is a drawback or not. Ears of everyone in a hearing distance may indeed be quite thankful.
The instrument’s appearance is striking as one can expect of a rosewood one. The quality of the finish is very good and even the soft case doesn’t look cheap. It’s actually a very practical solution for such a compact instrument.

Instrument Exceeded All of My Expectations

The sound is pure, clear, brilliant, and somewhat open. The instrument is a thing of quality, beauty, and value. I don't see how this garklein could be any better. Intonation is absolutely accurate once you get used to the differences in fingering from the Baroque system, and there are a few differences. My hands are not huge, but are probably unremarkable for a larger than average man. The tiny spacing between holes took a little time to get used to. The holes' positioning are thoughtfully placed, and make the most of the limited space. If your hands are the size of dinner plates and your fingers are the size of breakfast sausages, you won't be able to play this instrument. If you are looking for a garklein, I don't see how you could do any better than this flute by Kung. I think that you are going to like this instrument.

Die Optik dieser kleinen Flöte ist wirklich der Oberhammer! Eine winzige Flöte mit solch einer atemberaubenden Maserung, selbst wenn ich sie nie spielen würde, da sie seeehr hoch klingt (wen wundert’s), wäre sie für mich als Echtholz- und Blockflötenliebhaberin schon zum reinen Anschauen den Preis wert.
In der Herstellung ein kleines Kunstwerk, vom ersten Anspielen her ein verlässlicher durchdringender Ton, auch das Überblasen der (noch) höheren Töne gelingt kräftig und gut gestimmt. Ich habe beim ersten Spielen Muskelkater in den Fingern bekommen, der allerdings schnell wieder verfliegt, und brauche sehr viel Luft, bin nach kurzer Zeit außer Atem, was ich nicht erwartet hätte. Für kleine Frauenhände gibt es meiner Meinung nach kein Platzproblem beim Greifen. Es gehört bloß Übung dazu, die kleinen Löcher zu ertasten und im Spiel schnell genug wiederzufinden.
Sollte es möglich sein, die Flöte auch relativ leise zu spielen, ist sie zum Nachahmen der Vogelstimmen der Natur gut geeignet.
Es ist meine erste Garklein und daher nur ein erster Amateureindruck, bin aber mit dem Kauf und dem Instrument sowie mit dem Service von Thomann sehr zufrieden.

Kleine Flöte, große Freude!

Die Garklein ist eine gute Erweiterung meiner Flötensammlung. Ihr Klang schwebt über den anderen Flöten. Die Löcher sind ergonomisch angeordnet, sodass selbst meine etwas größeren Finger sie gut abdecken können. Die Bauweise aus einem Stück lässt ein Nachstimmen leider nicht zu. Die höheren Töne ab e4 sprechen etwas schwerer an. Die Maserung des Rosenholzes ist wunderschön, jede Flöte ist dadurch ein Unikat. Anfangs benötigt die Garklein etwas Einspielzeit, bis sie sich an die Feuchtigkeit "gewöhnt" hat. Dabei sind eine einfache Hülle und eine Grifftabelle. Alles in allem eine wunderschöne, trotz der Tonhöhe voll klingende Flöte!
